As you will see below, we welcome new members from beginners to more established players. Beginners will always find others to play against and get a good game. All we ask is that you have played at least a little chess before and are at least 16 years old or are accompanied by an adult.
The club has many positive points. We have a large room with plenty of spacing and many of us play simply for fun. On the other hand there is an opportunity to improve your chess by playing a stronger player and discussing the game afterwards and looking at the moves if you choose.
Through the summer when there are no league matches we simply meet up, chat and play non-competitive chess against each other. We have a mixture of players ranging from some very good ones to ‘almost beginners’. It’s a friendly atmosphere and a social occasion.
During the winter we have teams in the Sheffield League, Yorkshire League and the Doncaster League. Many members play in these teams although some are not interested and just want to carry on playing ‘social chess.’
Take a break from playing against your computer and play some real over-the-board chess! It’s more interesting and sociable.
Disabled Access
There is a ramp outside the club giving disabled access.
Our chess club meets in a downstairs room with disabled access, disabled parking and a disabled toilet.
Membership Fees
We have no formal membership fees or charges.
However chess club members have to join Gilroyd Social Club after a few weeks at a cost of £5 for the first year and £3 a year thereafter.
We ask that attendees buy a drink at the bar to support Gilroyd Social Club.
Club Events
During the summer we organise some ‘club events’.
These events range from five minute chess games, puzzles, 20 minute handicap matches up to a club tournament. Participation is completely voluntary.
